Over the next several weeks during guidance lessons students will learn how to help manage their emotions which can improve relationships and academic performance. This week introduces the relationship between the “thinking part” and the “feeling part” of the brain. When emotions are really strong it can be difficult to use the “thinking part” of the brain and emotions can run the show unless steps are taken to calm down.

Students have been learning about empathy, which is understanding how others feel. This week’s guidance lesson teaches students how to move from not only feeling empathy but taking action and showing compassion toward others. Saying something kind or asking someone if they need help are two simple ways students have been challenged to show compassion for others and foster an inclusive school environment.
